On this tumultuous Friday, the Philippines is in yet another struggle for power. The president refuses to resign on allegations of electoral fraud and payoffs from illegal gambling. Her Cabinet officials have resigned. A former president has joined the calls for her resignation. Civil society groups have withdrawn support from her and joined as well. Even some of her staunch supporters have crossed.
According to an analyst, her fate lies in the hands of the military and the church.
WITH TEN cabinet members deserting her, the fate of embattled Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo lies in the hands of the military and the powerful Roman Catholic Church, analysts said. “The military will not move until the people move and the people will not move until the church tells them to,” said Clarita Carlos, one of the country’s most respected political scientists at the University of the Philippines.
“The military is sending mixed signals and the church is deeply divided but the resignation of her economics team could be the catalyst,” she added.
